Panel 11 – The Eanna Sanctuary of Uruk

Ur-Namma is also responsible for the ziggurat of Uruk. It was dedicated to Inanna and participated in a greater complex, similar to that of Ur, except with an even higher number of courtyards. It is made in the image of the tower of Ur: it has three sets of stairs, one axial and two laterals, which lead to the summit of the first terrace. While three stories were restituted to the ziggurat of Ur, that of Uruk only had two. As for all contemporary or more recent ziggurats, the pinnacle temple has entirely disappeared, leaving its appearance to reconstitution.

  1. The ziggurat of Uruk was constructed on a lot that previously housed high-terraces. Whether they supported a building or not is unknown, but they date back to the early 3rd millennium B.C. (infography C. Schuppert)
